Coming Out--Step #1--The MOM.........

My maternal grandparents celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary tomorrow. So, the family gathered together at their house this afternoon. There could have been much drama, but there was none (Alhamdulillah!!!)

Why drama? Because I reverted to Islam in February (going on two months now). Although, I was living a Muslim lifestyle for a few months before my reversion, my family has no idea! I don't really clue my family in to every little thing in my life, so it's always a surprise when I come up with something new. LOL.............

Faith is something that is deeply personal to me and very important to my family. I was a Christian for 30 years and all of my family ascribes to the faith. So, letting them know that I'm a Muslim seems like the scariest thing I'll ever have to do!

So, I walk into my grandparents' house and give my hugs. My mom goes crazy over my scarf (hijab), but not in the way one would think. She loves it and wants to know where she can get one. LOL. We were sitting on the couch and she says to me, "You look like a little Muslim girl." (now, at this point I'm just shocked that she knows what a little Muslim girl looks like) So, I just said, "Yeah, I do." It must have been the way that I said it with such affirmation that she then asked, "Have you become Muslim?" I told her yes and she was like, "Really?" She didn't seemed to shocked about it to me. She just told me that she wanted me to be happy and that if it made me happy, then good for me. But here's the punchline to the whole thing: "Well as long as you remember that God sent His Son for us." I nearly choked on my water and I just started laughing.............
